WorldSpace Satellite Radio

Warning: This could be a long one, and is on my personal experiences with WorldSpace.

To start with, I got to know about WorldSpace Radio a good 8 years back, in 1998. My dad’s friend was using this stuff, and at that time, if I recollect correctly, it was free. There were 31 dedicated, ad-free channels that were belting out hits from across the globe. I remember my dad saying – “They’ll make it a pay and use service in a few years.”

And it happened! Today, WorldSpace is probably the only popular Satellite Radio Service provider, thanx to their advertisements campaign. I got a receiver for my father last year, July 2005. I’ve had absolutely no issues with the content, or the quality of the broadcast. WorldSpace lived upto their every word. The best content, Ad-Free, from all over the world. Now the number of Channels have increased, and so has the variety.

The way WorldSpace works is like this: They give you a PIN number, which is used to activate the receiver, when you pay for the subscription. The first year’s subscription is free of cost, and comes as a complementary gift with the receiver.

The subsctiption I had ran out this year, in July 2006. There was a grace period of 45 days, by which we had to renew the subscription. I got hold of one of the subscription packages, which costs Rs. 1800 for a year. There was a 10 digit number on it, and the instructions said that I had to call up the customer service, and give this 10 digit number, called R-PIN, to them, in exchange for which I’d be given a 22 digit number, that is to be entered into the receiver.

Unfortunately, for no mistake of mine, the customer service rep gave me a wrong number, which worked fine for 30 days from the date of entry, and later stopped working. Now since the R-PIN number was already used up (to give me the wrong 22 digit key), I couldn’t use it again.

I called them up right away and told them that there was a mistake on their part. The logged a complaint, gave me a complaint tracking number, and told me that they’d get back to me. I’ve been calling WorldSpace the entire of October, once every 3 days or so, asking them for the state of the logged complaint, which is being marked as “Done” without any actions, what-so-ever. Its been a month and a half, and my receiver at home is lying idle, with absolutely no reaction from WorldSpace.

I’m frankly shocked at the way WorldSpace has been attending to complaints, despite the fact that they have a dedicate Customer Service desk, who log a call, and give you a tracking number and do nothing about it promising someone would get back to you ASAP.

I strongly recommend anyone who’s reading this, not to buy a WorldSpace receiver. There’s the option of using FM, or get a PMP. You’ll probably never have to go through such a waste of time and money.

I called them up today again, and have told them that I will not be taking this lightly. Let me see how things proceed.

would anybody be able to send me the instruction manual for the BPL Diva, including the one related to positioning the antenna? I have tried to locate it on the net, to no avail.
    Thanks,

    Dear Sir/Madam,

I had heard a lot about the Worldspace radio broadcast when I arrived in India a few years ago. Much to my surprise, I was presented with a Worldspace radio for my birthday in March 2006, including a six month subscription from your retail outlet on Brigade Road, Bangalore.

I contacted your main installation office and requested one of your engineers to come to my residence and connect the product so that I could enjoy your services. I even paid an extra fee to subscribe to the advertised Talksport channel from the UK. Later I learned – much to my disappointment, that you did not offer the sports station, despite advertising to the contrary. I was informed that an engineer would come and install the product within the day.

Two weeks later an engineer came to install my Worldspace radio, but left saying he’ll return the same day, wires scattered in my room. Unfortunately, a further week later, I had to call your Bangalore offices again to request an engineer come back and complete his task. A few days elapsed when finally another engineer come over. However, much to my disappointment he could not punch in the code required to have access to the multitude number of varied stations/programmes.

I’m now still waiting……Ten Months have now elapsed since I was presented with the radio, and my six months free-subscription is now part of history. On a number of occasions I have come across agents in shopping malls who have tried to offer me ‘special’ deals on Worldspace products, but I keep telling them about my hard luck stories and that my Worldspace radio is now back in its original box, and collecting dust.

I’m sure you’ll agree that like food, many of our interests are like appetite. Once you loose the excitement of a product or experience without fulfillment, you no longer have the appetite to pursue it. Unfortunately, my experience of the Worldspace branding/service has left me with a very bad taste in the mouth.

Bon Apatite – Not, I fear,

    Yours Disappointedly,

    Naveed A Chaudhuri

Mine is basic BPL Reciver. Too much audio breakage in programs. Fell like starting the day with moksha and shruti and other programs. Just it is frustrating to listen the programs with audio breakages. This is happening since 8 months. I contacted customer care of world space, nobody cared to answer my calls. Whom to contact? Pl. call me on 9341146644 urgently.

  • jnarin

krishna: I’d suggest you check the placement of your antenna. I have nothing to do with Worldspace, and am another customer of theirs, just like you are. I have no contacts within Worldspace.

  • Mathew Kurian

I have purchased 3 units from Bellary Agent Mr. Raviraj (Mob.9980100189)Now the remote of two units are not working, third unit is not working at-all. error message – TDM Gone.

While contacting the supplier, he informed that his dealership withdrawn, hence he cannot help out.

If this is the situation, how we can expect sales after service ?

  • jnarin

Mathew Kurian : Call up the Customer care number provided in the manual, speak with them and find out what can be done. Your dealer isn’t the only person who can help you here. That is probably the biggest advantage of going with a brand which is represented internationally.

    DATE : 1st November 2007

Ref : Our Telephone Discussion on 31st October 2007
I have purchased a BPL receiver for World Space Radio from WORLD SPACE LOUNGE (For SV Sound Sense Pvt.Ltd) vide their Bill No. 3740 dtd. 09.06.07 (9th June 2007). And Also Paid Rs. 1800/- as Subscription for 1 Year.
The Reciever, when connected at our place, was not in a working condition. And also , It was found that the number of the receiver (RX Id) mentioned in the bill was different from that on the receiver.
When we approached the dealer with the faulty receiver, we were told by Mr. Shobhit Kumar – Asst. Manager Marketing of world space Who was present there that the dealer closed his business. And he will arrange for the replacement of the receiver. Accordingly, the set was replaced on 10th july 2007 with a working receiving one bearing the RxId: 195836 vide job card number 39487. On Repeated Requests, we were given the password on 22nd july 2007 and we started receiving World Space programs since then.
But our troubles started from First week of August when we started getting repeated calls from World Space asking us to Renew the subscription saying that our subscription expired. To every caller, we have given all the details. Every one said that they would rectify the mistake. But we continued to get the disturbing calls repeatedly.
We stopped getting the signals from 2nd October 2007. We gave a complaint to the customer care centre (Complaint No. 0894834 dtd. 2nd October 2007). We spoke to Marsha on that day, Kumar on 4th, Rehmath on 7th , Veena on 10th . Ravindra gave a new Complaint Number : 0918121 on 10th. We spoke to Sradha on 19th, Nazneen on 24th and Mr. Joy , Supervisor, on 24th. We were told that your CCC was helpless as your Bangalore office is not acting on the complaint.
As per your request, we are sending herewith the photo copies of the purchase bill and the job card.
We have spent money with the hope of having pleasure of listening to the World Space Radio Programs. But in reality, we are experiencing pain and harassment from your organization. We hope, you will do the needful and restore the signals to our receiver immediately.
    Yours, painfully,
    K.B.Sarma.

The instrument was sent within few days of my payment.Within 2-4 days after I received the instrument, some body phoned up from world space, Hyderabad and asked the code no. in order to activate my connection. But they have not activated my connection, and I was informed later that some other instrument was activated with that no. At last, after so many phone calls my connection was activated. But the instrument stopped working after 20 days. Again the story repeated. No body responded even after many calls. I had to contact Mrs Mrinalini just to contact the person,Mr.Sanjay.This happened in the month of july.About one and half months back Mr.Ravi came from Visakhapatnam and found that the instrument is defective and it needs to be replaced. He conveyed the same to Mr.Sanjay.But till now the instrument is not replaced and Mr.Sanjay and Mr.Ravi are not responding to my phone calls.

Yes guys I have two sets of connections. The new one installed on 23 Sept. 2008 and the rec. failed on 24 sept 2008. After hectic chase new rec. installed on 30 Oct. 2008. So instead of extending the license from 30 Oct 2008 to 29 Oct 2009 World Space cuts out one full month and license expires on 23 Sep 2009. I have sent out many mails but regret Worl Space has no courtesy to even acknowledge the mails. But yes they have cheeks to call and ask how is the set playing? They have cheeks to call and beg you to buy one more connection. I suggest just throw them out if they have no concern for customers.

    Well.

I had a similar poor experience immediately after it became a paid service, what, about 4 years ago?

Unfortunately I received no action, even after receiving a couple of emails saying it was being looked into. I emailed again, received no replies so wrote off the set.

I work in the technology side of the oil business and lots of people have asked me for recommendations for remote location entertainment systems in Europe, Africa and Asia. I always advise them NOT to get WorldSpace, after all, my own experiences were not good…

Glad to hear yours was better.

World Space India Pvt Ltd are shameless cheaters. I was using their old model. First i got a sms from WS to offer a new set which could play AM & FM stations so I replied. Then a lady from the company called and promised i would be able to play AM & FM stations with the satellite antena also. I bought a set due to these illusive descriptons. No technician even came to install it . I arranged to fix it my self and it played only world space. AM & FM stations were horrible to hear due to disturbances. I called company and they started telling that it was not their product ! Taking order, receiving money and dispatching was done with brand name World Space and now their entire approach changed. Meanwhile The set stopped functioning . After a lot of tussles they advised me to send the set to Ahmedabad office for which I had to pay 250 / – Rs. then I went there several times . their technical staff was knowing nothing about radio set . Since two months I am demanding refund for my radio set + subscription +expences done to open their eyes and these shameless people are denying. I am going to take legal actions against them soon. If you are a victim of the company , join me please. contact- mail-worldspaceradiovictims@gmail.com or mobile- 9825043751

    Dear Ahmed Mukhtar,

World Space Radio has shut down their operations, except for one channel Radio Sai Global Harmony, a free channel telecast from Melbourne, Australia, which can be heard even without subscription. World Space Radio has already deceived many customers by collecting subsscription amount, particularly from India which runs in to several crores, for which they are fighting a case internationally. So please DO NOT PAY ANY SUBSCRIPTION. This is for your information. Regards, Rangarajan Venkatachari.

    Hi,

I took this BPL World Space long back, and never installed, but the time I planned, the company got shut down. I stay in Andhra Pradesh, india,I would like to know, whether I can use it as a normal FM receiver, so that I can tune in the available FM Stations available in my area, if possible, please suggest me the procedure.

Thanks in advance for your valuable suggestion.

    regards
