Blocking Cellphone Signals in Movie Theaters

I read this article recently.

Plays, operas, ballets and films in Russia are routinely punctuated by the trilling of mobile phones and many patrons are unashamed about chatting in defiance of terse warnings to turn phones off at the start of the evening.

How true! How many times have I been in a theater only to find that the person next to me is solving a world crisis chatting happily on the mobile phone, oblivious to the fact that people around came there to watch the movie, not to hear him/her chat on the phone!

It IS pretty irritating to hear the familiar AirTel tune (which is supposedly the ringtone by maximum number of people, even if they don’t have an AirTel connection) or a phone scream out and the person answering “HELLO! I AM WATCHING A MOVIE! THE MOVIE IS VERY GOOD” (Caps indicate shouting).

Some countries do not allow the usage of equipment that can enhance or block any form of wireless transmission. But I certainly wish theaters here would do something about the noisy chatter boxes, something more than displaying videos of people being zapped by aliens when talking on the phone, or display a screen requesting people to turn the mobile phones off.

  1. I don’t know if using jammers etc. would be legal and for the people that do care and turn their phones on silent, it would be an inconvenience. People just need to be empathetic to others I guess.
